It’s the beginning of February. Have you already forgotten your 2018 resolution?
That’s ok. I did too.
Sometimes, the start to a new year comes with so much pressure. A new diet. A new job. Finishing an old project. A new resolution – or maybe, it’s the same OLD resolution that you keep forgetting. So, here’s another option.
Celebrate a new activity you started last year, and keep doing it. Yep. I’m talking about doing what you already did, but making it a habit. Tweaking it a bit. Making it second nature. Think about what you did last year that you want to celebrate and do again, and even better, in 2018.
It feels good when we know that we can do something well. Why do we feel like we always have to be improving? Sometimes we need to honor who and where we are, and dominate it. Be your best self without telling yourself that you’re not enough. Surround yourself with friends, coworkers, and family that support and encourage you.
Find satisfaction and contentment within yourself and live it out. The Book of Joy, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, provides insight on ways to find and experience joy. In the very first chapter, it is The Dalai Lama states something we already know, but often ignore. “Sadly, many of the things that undermine our joy and happiness we create ourselves. Often it comes from the negative tendencies of the mind, emotional reactivity, or from our inability to appreciate and utilize the resources that exist within us.” Sometimes, our worst enemy can be ourselves and the negative chatter that we allow to bounce around in our heads.
So today? Celebrate what you have already done well. And do it again. And support others who want to try to try to do the same for themselves. Or, learn from someone else’s successes and allow yourself to experience that personal growth too. Through it all, be gentle with yourself. Know that we are all learning and growing… but we can also appreciate where we are now.
