Preventing or Reversing Alzheimers…Is it Possible?

I was 15 years old sitting in the kitchen with my grandmother.  She smiled as she shared, for the 50th time, her fondest childhood memories as if they had just happened yesterday.  Sadly, many times she couldn’t recall if she had eaten lunch an hour before.

Unfortunately, my story is not uncommon.  Dr. Dale Bredesen, author of  The End of Alzheimer's Program, seeks to identify the root cause of the disease so that a multifaceted plan, including but not limited to nutritional, behavioral, hormonal and environmental factors, can be customized for the person.

The testing and changes that one would embrace can be costly in time and money but as Dr. Bredesen points out “what better investment could there be than an investment in your brain where you’re going to prevent these nursing home bills, keep yourself out of the nursing home, and, hopefully, keep yourself sharp for decades to come?”(1)

Is Dr. Bredesen’s protocol worth it?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  Having information gives us choices, a gift and at times a burden.  I consider this as I remember my grandma.  Eventually my family couldn’t take care of her, and she went to a nursing home.  Towards the end she couldn’t talk, and she seemed to look through me.  I held her hand and she began to cry.  The disease was devastating, but it couldn’t take away our love for each other.

If you can relate to my story you might ask, “What do I do with this experience?”  Good question.  As a health coach, I can help you come up with the right answer for yourself.
